Artist's Statement

The rough sketch of this cartoon did not include the girl and was titled simply, "Political Cartoon," as an ironic acknoweldgement that it was pretty heavy-handed in its agenda. I'm frankly not crazy about this one. I like that it's so stark and truthful, but none of that matters as much as whether it's funny or not, about which I still have my doubts. If anyone's reading this, let me know what you think.

I ended up being forced to run this because I got back home Friday night after a very long day spent helping a friend tear down a shed and haul it to the dump only to find, to my horror, an e-mail from my editor at the City Paper saying "I'm sure someone's already told you about the early deadline this week, this is just a reminder that we need your cartoon by 5:00 today." No one had told me about the early deadline. It was then eight-thirty. So I frantically finished this drawing and e-mailed it in. Sometimes you just have to turn in the best idea you have at deadline, call it a day, and have a beer.
